What a Week in Haiti!

July 23, 2021 by Ken MacGillivray

Today marks the end of our first of two weeks in Haiti – and what a week it’s been for our mission team! Here are some highlights (enjoy the pics below):

  • We greeted and prayed with our partner pastors.
  • Along with our Haitian team, we prepared all materials for the pastors training.
  • Jerry shared the gospel and Brian shared his testimony in an English language class for young adults.
  • Tony, Ken and Jerry taught classes in a Bible college, founded last year by one of our partner pastors.
  • We visited and spoke in two Haitian churches.
  • We led 18 hours of ministry training for 107 Haitian church leaders over three days.
  • We ate a lot of rice!

We plan to leave on Saturday for our next pastors training in Cap Haitien. Pray that the city remains calm after President Jovenel’s funeral there today. Pray that we are able to start our training conference as scheduled on Monday morning. Pray that the Lord will keep us safe so that we can fulfill His will for our two weeks here.

Thank you for your prayers and support for our trip to Haiti for such a time as this!

Give Like a Child – and an Adult

July 23, 2021 by Ken MacGillivray

God wants us to give like a child – and an adult. I had two reminders of that recently. One of our faithful supporters contacted me a couple weeks ago to ask if they could stop by our house. Their son wanted to give something to Partnership of Pastors. Later that afternoon their son quietly handed me a small paper box he had made and colored. It was filled with change and bills – $63.45 in total. I was so moved! His mom told me later that he had saved birthday and allowance money to give to PPI.

He gave like a CHILD – humbly, generously, freely. God wants all of us – whatever our age – to give like that. Jesus often points to the simple faith and self-forgetful worship of children as examples to all of us (Luke 18:16-17; Matthew 21:15-16). I was reminded to give like a child.

That same week a potential supporter emailed me to ask, “How can I see where moneys/donations are distributed? How much is designated for salaries, overhead and actual support to those being ministered to?” He apologized for the “crudeness” of his question. Here’s how I responded:

That’s a great question, not a crude one. And it’s a question we need to ask – especially these days – of every mission ministry like PPI, every charity, and every church.

PPI financial statements are open for anyone to look over. I’m attaching our most recent statements. It may also help you to see our budget categories (attached), where you can see that we invest 90% of contributions into our main work of pastors training conferences. We call that ETR – encouraging, training and resourcing. The remaining 10% of our budget supports our main work through partner development/contact and administration.

Once you’ve had a chance to look these over, let us know if you have more questions. And thanks for asking! I encourage you to avoid supporting any ministry or organization that won’t show you this information and more – except for donor information, of course, which must remain confidential.

God wants us to give like ADULTS – with discernment, wisdom and strategy. We are so grateful for your faithful, generous support of Partnership of Pastors International. And we want you to be completely confident that every penny you give is invested with integrity and strategy in our mission of encouraging, training and resourcing Haitian pastors. We want you to be free to give like a child and an adult!

For Such a Time

July 15, 2021 by Ken MacGillivray

Trouble requires response. Need creates opportunity. That’s why we’re in Haiti right now doing what God has called us to do – encouraging, training and resourcing pastors.

Most of you know that Haiti’s president, Jovenal Moise, was assassinated a week ago and many are concerned about unrest and violence here. Haiti closed its borders and airports for a few days. Mission and humanitarian trips were canceled. But on Thursday morning our team of five flew into Cap Haitien, Haiti. We will be here for two weeks to lead two pastors training conferences in two cities.

Why are we here? Because trouble requires response. Because need creates opportunity. Because our Lord and Leader provides for and protects those actively involved in His mission making disciples of all nations. He promised, “I am with you always even to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20).

This wasn’t a cavalier decision. The increased risk is real – and a little frightening. We are in contact with Haitian friends and American mission friends in Northeast Haiti, where we’ll be. So far all is calm, by Haiti standards. We are taking extra precautions to keep a low profile while we’re here. I have contact information for security guards if we need them. In short, we are doing our best to be wise and extra careful.

But this is the time to be here! This time of trouble and uncertainty in Haiti is an opportune time to encourage, train and resource church leaders for the days ahead. Pastors need encouragement! Church leaders want good training! Churches need good ministry resources! And, frankly, if you and I wait for a “safe time” to be part of the Lord’s mission in most developing countries, we’ll never go.

So we take measured risks for the sake of the gospel. With both eyes open, we refuse to save our lives, only to ultimately lose them (Matthew 16:24-26). Instead we lose our lives for our faithful Savior who gave His life for us. In that alone, we find real life and lasting joy

Please pray for us these next two weeks. Pray for the Lord to protect us so that we can fulfill His calling here. Pray for the Lord to free us from fear and fill us with faith and joy as we lead the training conferences and interact with Haitian brothers and sisters. Pray that we will grow in our love for God and faith in His promises to us for this one short life He gives us.

Who, Why and What?

June 30, 2021 by Ken MacGillivray

Lots of landscapers drive past our house in a day. I’ve never sat on our front porch and actually counted them, but it’s a lot. And it makes sense. Grass needs cutting, bushes need trimming. Landscapers get it done.

I tend my own lawn. (I like doing it, and I need the exercise.) But if I were looking for a landscaper, I would hire someone who 1) really knew what they were doing, 2) consistently did it with excellence and 3) did it at a good price. Wouldn’t you? If you use a lawn service, you know how important these things are.

What’s true of landscapers is also true of missions. A LOT of mission organizations exist in the United States. That’s a good thing, but Christians, churches, and mission leaders rightly ask questions such as:

  • Do we REALLY know what we’re doing? In other words, are we focused on the right things?
  • Are we consistently doing missions with excellence? Are we as effective in the Lord’s mission as we could be?
  • Are we doing missions at a good price? Are we making the most of the funds God provides?

For eternity’s sake, we should be as clear, strategic and effective as we can possibly be!

Did you know that 90-95% pastors lack access to good ministry training? 90-95%!! Church leaders in countries like Haiti will never be able to go to Bible college, let alone seminary. They don’t have the money to do it. These pastors also lack basic ministry resources, including the Bible.

That’s why PPI is committed to offering short-term, high impact ministry training in accessible locations to front-line church leaders. We take ministry training to pastors so they can continue to live and minister in their home setting. PPI training doesn’t replace Bible college or seminary training. That’s not our intent. Rather, our training complements Bible college or seminary by providing a solid foundation for more formal ministry training – if a pastor and his family are able to access it.

But for the majority of pastors who likely will not be able to access formal Bible college or seminary training, PPI courses provide a foundation in God’s Word and practical ministry training for them to build on in their churches and communities.

I’m convinced that this focus on encouraging, training and resourcing national pastors is the right WHO, WHY an WHAT for missions in our generation! This isn’t rocket science. Rather it’s an ACM for me – an area of moral clarity. And I am so thankful for the “fellowship” of mission organizations with the same focus that PPI is privileged to be part of – The Thompson Bible International Institute (aka Help for Christian Nationals) led by Dr. John Jauchen and African Pastoral Training directed by Chuck Ballard. As a fellowship of ministries, we’re focused on the obvious need – the 90-95% of pastors who lack access to good ministry training – and we’re committed to addressing that need with excellence and cost-effectiveness.

Okay, enough on that. I need to get my lawn mowed. Learn more about partnering with us HERE.

Haitian Pastors in Atlanta?!

June 26, 2021 by Ken MacGillivray

Haitian pastors in Atlanta, Georgia?! Yes! As I write this, I’m part of training 42 Haitian church leaders at a Haitian Alliance Church in north Atlanta. Nearly 20,000 Haitians live in this area.

My friend, Chuck Ballard, is leading this training and invited me to join him in encouraging and training Haitian pastors here. Chuck is the Executive Director of African Pastoral Training (APT) Ministries. (Check out aptministries.org for more information about Chuck and APT.)

Did you know that over 1,000,000 Haitians live in the United States? Nearly half reside in Florida, 190,000 in New York City, and the rest in larger U.S. cities such as Atlanta.

This is day two of our training, but already I have had many opportunities to meet and network with a number of Haitian-American pastors. They are concerned for their home country and are VERY interested in our pastors training there.

After the training, I will meet with leaders of the Haitian Evangelical Clergy of Georgia to talk more about partnering together in training Haitian pastors. This is an avenue of partnership – and potential multiplication of our vision – that I didn’t anticipate even a week ago. I’m humbled again by the Lord’s leading and these amazing opportunities to make a difference for eternity!

As part of today’s training, we focused on 2 Chronicles 7:14 then took time to pray specifically for Haiti. It was a moving time. Who knows how God will use our conversations with Haitian-American pastors in Atlanta to multiply our mission of encouraging, training and resourcing pastors in Haiti and other developing countries?
